Religious Education is taught to all students at St. Bede’s. We believe that RE should be the subject that constantly challenges our pupils; academically, spiritually, emotionally.  It is the subject that is at the core of everything we do as a Catholic school.  It enables pupils to grow, to reach their potential, and to find truth within themselves; providing the opportunity for pupils to discover Christ’s presence in their lives.  Our vision is that our pupils develop a thirst and love of our subject.  We believe that RE should be amongst the most challenging subjects on the curriculum, and as a result our lessons promote academic study whilst encouraging pupils to question and always to seek more. We maintain the highest of standards; building positive relationships, underpinned by our belief that every child can succeed.

KS3 CURRICULUM

The new Religious Education Directory (RED) ‘To know You more clearly’ was published in 2023 and is to be implemented by September 2025.  The Key Stage 3 curriculum is therefore in the process of being rewritten and developed to comply with the programme of study.  The KS3 curriculum follows the liturgical year and is based on a spiral narrative which aims to build on previous learning.

Whilst the new curriculum is being rolled out throughout KS3, there will be a period of time where the legacy curriculum will be taught alongside the new RED.

KS4 CURRICULUM

All pupils in Year 10 & 11 are entered for the RE GCSE.  The GCSE course followed is Edexcel Religious Studies Specification A, which has three areas of study:

Paper 1: Catholic Christianity: Beliefs and teachings, practices, sources of authority and forms of expression (50%)

Paper 2: Judaism: Beliefs, teachings and practices (25%)

Paper 3: Philosophy and Ethics: Arguments for the existence of God and religious teachings on relationships and families in the twenty-first century (25%)

In order to support our pupils in their revision, pupils are guided to the departmental YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/StBedesBlackburnRE and our bespoke website https://stbedesblackburnre.co.uk/
